WEST POINT, N.Y.-Army catcher Chris Simmons drove in three runs, which included a homer, to lift the homestanding Black Knights to a 10-3 victory over the Marist baseball squad Thursday afternoon at Doubleday Field. Army improved to 13-12-1 with the win, while the Red Foxes dropped to 9-15 overall.
Army right fielder Barnes Connell also drove in a pair of runs, while four Black Knights scored two runs apiece (Simmons, left fielder Milan Dinga, first baseman Cole White and designated hitter Kyle Fleming). White and second baseman Tony Capozzi also had three hits.
Marist was led by senior Kevin Grauer's (Plain City, Ohio) second career home run to right center in the fifth inning. Senior designated hitter Bryan Towler (Hampton, N.H.) also plated two runs with a pair of hits, while junior right fielder Travis Musolf (Manchester, N.J.) also posted a pair of hits.
The Red Foxes left 10 men on base, marking the fourth straight game Marist has left at least that many runners stranded.
Army's Matt Snyder (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching two innings with two hits and one earned run. Marist's Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) suffered the loss, yielding six earned runs in just three innings of work. He also allowed nine hits and struck out four batters.
The Red Foxes will be back in action Saturday as they take on Niagara Saturday at noon in Niagara University, N.Y. Marist defeated the Purple Eagles 5-4 in the MAAC Championship game last season to capture its fourth league title and fifth NCAA Tournament bid since 1997.
