POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Women's Soccer Team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Bucknell on Wednesday night in its home opener. Freshman Maria Baez (Levittown, N.Y.) gave Marist an early 1-0 lead, but the Bison scored twice in the second half to earn the victory.
Baez scored her first career goal at the 25:47 mark to break Marist's three game scoreless streak and give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first goal the Foxes have scored since a 2-1 win over Brown on September 8.
Marist held the lead until the 50th minute, when Bucknell's Jennifer Dervarics tied the score at 1-1. Dervarics took a cross from Jennifer Margolis and Leah Grimm inside 10 yards and put it behind Marist keeper Caitlin Nazarechuk (Ringwood, N.J.). The game would remained deadlocked until the 83rd minute when Margolis tallied the game winner. Off a corner kick, Margolis came away with the ball after a wild scramble in front of the goal mouth to put the goal away. Krista Lee Gentile assisted on the game winner.
After a slow start, Bucknell came on to hold the advantage in shots at 14-9, as well as in corner kicks at 7-3.
With the loss, Marist falls to 2-5 on the season and has lost four straight. The Red Foxes will be back on the field on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Philadelphia for a match-up with St. Joseph's. Kick-off in the City of Brotherly Love is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
