Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - The Marist men's tennis team christened its new on-campus facility in style, posting a 7-0 victory over Siena on Wednesday in the first match played at the Marist Tennis Pavilion.
The match was not only the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener for the Red Foxes, but the team's first dual match of the season. Marist dropped just one set in six singles matches en route to the triumph.
For the Red Foxes, Pedro Genovese (Asuncion, Paraguay/Colegio de San Jose) earned a 6-4, 6-1 first singles victory over Jerry Deuel. Gregory Marks (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Nick Rutherford at second singles. Ray Josephs (Rose Valley, Pa.) cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory at third singles over Stefan Putyera. At fourth singles, Federico Rolon (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) downed Kevin Gioia, 6-2, 7-5. Antonio Oliver (Madrid, Spain/IES Burgorozas) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles against Chris Auffredou. At sixth singles, Frank Algier (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) defeated Mike Aliotta, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Marist also won all three doubles matches. Genovese and Rolon topped Deuel and Rutherford at first doubles, 8-5. Marks and Josephs shut out Putyera and Jay Godbole, 8-0. Oliver and Jeff Nguyen (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) got past Gioia and Auffredou, 8-3.
The Red Foxes will return to action when they take part in the University of Connecticut Tournament from Friday until Sunday. Marist will return home on Oct. 7 for dual matches against Montreal in the morning and Hartford in the afternoon. The Red Foxes will not play another MAAC match until they travel to Saint Peter's on Feb. 27.
Siena fell to 0-2 overall with the loss. The match was also the MAAC opener for the Saints.
