Marist Rebounds With 75-55 Win At Fordham

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team forced 27 Fordham turnovers on their way to a 75-55 win Wednesday night, the Red Foxes' first of the season. Senior Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) led Marist with 19 points and seven rebounds.

The two teams traded baskets early, with Marist grabbing the early advantage at 13-8 behind good frontcourt play from Dahlman and Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio). After Fordham tied the game at 13-13 on a Kassie Humphries jumper with 7:06 to go in the half, the Red Foxes went on a 15-4 run powered by 13 points from Fitz and Dahlman to go ahead 28-17.

Marist would keep the momentum going into the second half. With the frontcourt dominating the lane for most of the night, the guards for Marist would start to get open looks from the perimeter and convert. After going 0-10 from behind the three-point arc, the Red Foxes would convert on five three-point tries in the second half, including three from Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio). The Red Foxes would lead would hover around at 20 for much of the game, with their largest lead at 26 when Maria Laterza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) made her first career shot to put Marist up 71-45 with 2:29 to go in the game. Marist would go on to win 75-55 to move to 1-1 on the season.

The Marist frontcourt led the way on Wednesday night, with Dahlman scoring 19 points and grabbing a game-high seven rebounds. Fitz added 17 points, making six of nine field goals and five of six free throws. Johnson had another great game off the bench, making three of five three-pointers to score nine points. The Red Foxes got 28 bench points in the game.

The Red Foxes shot 45% from the field in the game, including 60% in the second half. After mustering only five free-throw attempts against Ohio State, Marist was 16 of 20 from the charity stripe against the Rams. The Marist defense turned 27 Fordham turnovers into 23 points, and held the Rams to 14 points in the paint and 34% from the field.

Fordham (0-2) was led by Megan Mahoney's 17 points. Annie Zopf added 15 points, going six for six from the free-throw line. The Rams did hold the rebounding edge in the game, 35-34.

Marist will return to action Friday night with a 7:00 game at Stony Brook.
