HONOLULU, HAWAII - Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Red Foxes to their fifth consecutive win, 66-59, over Nebraska Friday afternoon in the Oahu Classic. Fitz also had 11 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.
Junior Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had a season-high 17 points with five rebounds and four assists. Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) added nine points and three assists, going 4-4 at the free-throw line. Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) had another solid rebounding effort, grabbing six rebounds and scoring six points.
It was Nebraska who got off to a fast start, taking a 14-4 lead 7:48 into the game. Marist would go on the same run, with an Élise Caron (Quebec, Canada) three-pointer tying the game at 18-18 with 7:29 to go in the half. The Red Foxes would take the momentum, getting out to their biggest lead of the half, 30-22, on a Dahlman layup with 3:04 to go in the first half. Marist would lead at the half 36-28.
As they did to start the game, the Cornhuskers started the second half with a 12-2 run to get within two at 40-38. After a Fitz layup got the Red Foxes up four at 42-38, Nebraska would close to within one on a Nicole Neals free-throw. That would be as close as the Cornhuskers would get, as back-to-back three pointers by Viani would key an 11-0 run to put Marist up 12, 53-41, with 10:58 left in the game. From there, Fitz and Viani led the Red Foxes, scoring Marist's last 13 points to win the game 66-59.
Nebraska (3-1) was led by 14 points from Cory Montgomery. Danielle Page, who was the Cornhuskers' leading scorer coming into the game, was held to 10 points and nine rebounds. Marist shot 43.6% from the field, with Nebraska shooting 42.6% from the field. The Red Foxes held the Cornhuskers to 1-17 (5.9%) shooting from the three-point line. Marist had another great game from the free-throw line, going 13-15.
Marist concludes their seven-game road trip tomorrow against Eastern Washington. Tip-off is at 5 p.m.
