POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team took to the floor Saturday night against Athletes in Action, and won 80-63 at the McCann Center. Junior guard Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with 14 points.
The starting frontcourt of Sarah Smrdel (Mentor, Ohio) and Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) scored 12 points each with Fitz adding nine rebounds. Sophomore Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) came off the bench with 11 points and seven rebounds. Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) filled the box score with six points, seven rebounds, and six assists. All 11 players that saw time for Marist scored in the game.
The two teams traded leads early, but Athletes in Action would gain momentum with an 8-0 run to take a 23-16 lead with 10:15 to go in the opening half. Marist would come back with 14-2 run to go ahead 30-25 late in the half. The Red Foxes led 40-31 at halftime.
Marist dominated the early portion of the second half, scoring 23 of the first 32 points en route to a 63-40 lead with 9:00 to go, their biggest of the night. From there, the Red Foxes would cruise to an 80-63 win. Marist forced 19 Athletes in Action turnovers in the game, while only turning the ball over 15 times. For the game, the Red Foxes shot 43.5% from the field, with Athletes in Action shooting 39.3%.
Marist assisted on 20 of their 30 baskets, and were a perfect 15 of 15 from the free throw line. The Red Foxes outrebounded Athletes in Action 45-32. Marist took advantage of 15 offensive rebounds, turning them into 17 second chance points.
Jade Leitao led Athletes in Action with 18 points. Forward Krista Rappahahn added 12 points, and Shaunda Snyder scored 10 points off the bench.
Marist opens the 2007-2008 season in Columbus, Ohio against #16 Ohio State. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.
