Dec. 12, 2007

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team suffered its first loss at the McCann Center since November 18, 2005 on Wednesday night, falling to Hartford 49-32. Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) led the Red Foxes with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field.

Meg Dahlman (Spencerport, N.Y.) added seven points for Marist. Julianne Viani (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored four points and had a team-high five rebounds. Marist's 32 points is the lowest point total for the team since scoring 40 against St. Mary's in the 2004-2005 season and the lowest output at home since putting up 31 against Iona in 1998.

The game would be a defensive battle the whole way. Neither team scored in the first 3:05, with Hartford's Lisa Etienne scoring the game's first two points. The Hawks would score the next five on a Diana Delva layup and a three-pointer from MaryLynne Schaefer. Marist would get its first basket at the 14:32 mark in the first half on a Dahlman layup. She would follow that up with a three to get the Red Foxes within two at 7-5 with 11:49 to go in the first half.

Hartford would go on the first big run in the game after a Nikki Flores (Montvale, N.J.) jumper made the score 10-7 Hartford with 10:49 to go in the half. The Hawks would score the next 10 points over 6:46 to go ahead 17-7, capped off by a jumper from Jamie McCabe. Marist would respond, scoring seven of the last nine points in the half to make the score 19-14.

Hartford would jump out to a 24-14 lead early in the second half, and that is when Fitz would take over for Marist. Having not taken a shot in the first half, Fitz would go on a 10-0 run by herself over 3:15 to tie the game at 24-24 with 14:57 to go. After a Katie Kelley free throw put Hartford ahead 25-24, Fitz would connect on a layup in the lane to give Marist its first lead of the game, 26-25, with 10:49 to go.

A pair of Jonyce Hollins would give the Hawks a one point lead, 27-26, with 9:58 to go. Dahlman would answer with a jumper to give the Red Foxes a 28-27 lead with 9:38 to go. Hartford would go on a 6-1 run behind the play of Danielle Hood to take a 35-29 lead. Viani would cut that lead in half with a three-pointer to make the score 35-32 lead with 5:42 to go. That would be the last points for Marist, as Hartford would go on a 14-0 run to end the game, winning 49-32.

Marist (10-2) shot 27.3% in the game, making only 12-of-44 shots. Hartford shot 32.1% from the field and held a 41-33 rebounding edge. The Hawks had 16 offensive rebounds, turning them into 19 second chance points. The Red Foxes assisted on nine of their 12 baskets, with Hartford mustering only three assists in the game. The Hawks forced 15 Marist turnovers and turned them into 10 points.

Hartford (9-2) was led by Hood's 10 points, who also added four boards. Diana Delva added nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Guard MaryLynne Schaefer scored nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from the three-point line.

Marist will go on the road December 22nd to take on Albany. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
