Marist Men's Lacrosse Opens Season With Tough Loss At Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team opened its season on Saturday with a hard-fought 7-6 loss to Army at historic Michie Stadium. Sophomore attack Nick Hautau (South Salem, N.Y.) paced the Red Foxes with a game-high three goals in the contest.

Please check back later at GoRedFoxes.com for further updates.The Red Foxes started slowly, as Army's Hunter Wakeland scored the game's first goal just 12 seconds in. However, Hautau answered with the first of his three goals with 7:27 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 1-1.

Army and Marist alternated the next four goals, with Hautau and sophomore midfielder Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scoring for the Red Foxes. With the contest tied at three apiece and 2:28 left in the second quarter, Army's Tyler Seymour scored a man-up goal to give the Black Knights a 4-3 lead going into halftime.

Junior midfielder Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) scored with 9:20 left in the third quarter to tie the game for the fourth time, this time at 4-4. However, Army answered with three successive goals to build its lead to 7-4. O'Hara and Hautau scored in the fourth quarter to cut the Red Foxes' deficit to one, but Marist was unable to secure possession in the closing minute for a late chance at a tying goal.

Sophomore goaltender Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 14 saves for the Red Foxes. Hautau and senior midfielder Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) led Marist with seven shots apiece. Junior midfielder Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had a team-best five ground balls, and won 11 of his 16 face-offs.

As a team, Army recorded 26 ground balls to Marist's 21. Army led in shots by a 32-27 margin. The Black Knights went 1-for-3 in extra-man opportunities, while Marist was 0-for-3.

The Red Foxes will return to action on March 3 with a noon contest at Vermont.
