NEW YORK, N.Y - Senior captain Brian Demarco (Whippany, NY) broke his own school record in the 400-meter dash and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay team to lead the Marist College men's track team to its best finish in school history at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference indoor track championships, held at the New Balance Track and Field Center Friday night.

DeMarco was runner-up in the 400 with a time of 49.14, eclipsing the mark he set last week in Boston of 49.17. He trailed only event winner Darnell Douglas of Manhattan College (48.75), while edging out Rider's Anthony Parillo (49.15) for second place. Later in the evening, he anchored a sizzling 4x400 relay to first place with a split of 49.3 seconds. That relay team - featuring four senior captains - was first in 3:21.61, just off the school-record mark of 3:21.42. Mike Bamberger (East Northport, NY) led off by storming out with a monster 49.6-second leg. He handed off in the lead to Patrick Carroll (51.1), who passed the baton to Bryan Quinn (51.2) as the Red Foxes held off a hard-charging St. Peter's team for the victory, the first MAAC title in that event in school history.

The Red Foxes finished with 63 points, just one point shy of third-place Iona. The point total is the best in school history for the program at the MAAC Indoor Championships, eclipsing the 2002 and 2004 team totals of 53 points. The Red Foxes got scoring contributions from all corners of the meet in a well-rounded team performance.

Junior Shaun Kippins (Latham, NY) had a big day for the Red Foxes in the field and on the track. He placed fourth in the triple jump with a season's best leap of 13.41 meters and then followed that up with a seasonal best leap of 6.45 in the long jump, good for fifth place. Then, he stepped on the track and ran the 400-meter led of the second-place distance medley relay team.

Junior Nick Giacomo (Staten Island, NY) ran a personal-best time of 8.28 seconds and placed third in the 55-meter hurdles. Teammate Chris Ceballos was fifth in the event.

Freshman Everett Butler (Windsor, CT) scored in both sprint events, placing fifth in the 55-meter dash (6.70) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.04). Fellow freshman Whitfield Morris was sixth in the 55-meter dash (6.82).

In the 5,000-meter run, Marist runners took three scoring places. Sophomore David Raucci (Clermont, NY) was third in 15:23.38. He was followed closely by senior captain Justin Harris (Wappingers Falls, NY), who was fourth in 15:24.81, and junior Tom Williams (Pleasant Valley, NY), who was fifth in 15:32.04.

Sophomore Kris Geist (East Berne, NY) was fifth in the mile run in 4:24.63, and then followed that up with a strong leadoff leg in the second-place distance medley relay. Freshman Conor Shelley (Rockville Centre, NY) was fifth in a tactical 3,000-meter run in 8:47.81, just one second off his best in that event. Freshman Max Carow (Fanwood, NJ) was fifth in the pole vault in 3.75 meters.

Marist also had a league high 13 members named to the MAAC All-Academic Team on Friday. To earn this honor a student athlete must complete two semesters at his institution and maintain a grade point average of 3.2. Brandon Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Criminal Justice), Michael Cocca (Suffield, Conn./Finance & Info Systems), Brian DeMarco (Whippany, N.J./Marketing), Thomas Dixon (Staten Island, N.Y./Finance), Kris Geist (East Berne, N.Y./Mathematics), Nicholas Giacomo (Staten Island, N.Y./Communications), John Keenan (Centereach, N.Y./Psychology), Ted Marak (Guilford, Conn./Biology), Matt Maynes (Tolland, Conn./Radio/TV/Film), Mike Rolek (Maplewood, N.J./Sports Communications/Journalism), Girma Segni (Bronx, N.Y./Accounting), Joe Tarantello (Cheshire, Conn./Finance) and Tom Williams (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Marketing) all received academic honors.

The Red Foxes return to action on Friday when they return to the New Balance Track and Field Center for the NYU Fastrack Invitational.
