HANOVER, N.H. - The Marist men's tennis team won four singles matches and swept the doubles matches to earn a 5-2 victory over Stony Brook at Dartmouth University on Sunday. It was the first time the Red Foxes defeated the Seawolves - a team ranked in the top 15 regionally - in program history.
At first singles, Pedro Genovese (Asuncion, Paraguay) earned a 6-7 (5), 6-0, 6-4 win over Nihal Advani. Freshman Christian Coley (Cheshire, Conn.) earned a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Youssef Fassi-Fehri at third singles. Ilan Shvartz downed Marist's Gregory Marks (Newburgh, N.Y.) at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-4. Ray Josephs (Rose Valley, Pa.) captured a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Alex Markovich at fifth singles, and Federico Rolon (San Diego, Calif.) topped Jon Epstein 6-4, 6-2 to win his match at sixth singles.
The Red Foxes swept the three doubles matches. Genovese and Rolon topped Advani and Van Veen 8-3 at first doubles, and Marks and Josephs topped Fassi-Fehri and Zach Smith by the same score at second doubles. Sessagesimi and Coley topped Shvartz and Epstein at third doubles 8-6.
Marist will return to action on Saturday, when the Red Foxes host Binghamton at Dutchess Racquet Club. The match is slated to start at 6 p.m.
