March 28, 2007

Final Stats

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Freshman attacker Matt Teichmann (Babylon, N.Y.) scored four goals to lead the Marist men's lacrosse team to a 9-5 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday. The win was the first for the Red Foxes on the season, as they improved to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League play.

Scoring was at a premium in the first half, as the match remained scoreless until an unassisted Teichmann goal with 24 seconds left in the first quarter. Each team scored a pair of goals in the second quarter, allowing the Red Foxes to take a 3-2 halftime lead. However, Marist came out of the intermission with four unanswered goals, as the scoring came from junior attacker Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.), sophomore midfielder Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), junior midfielder Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) and Teichmann.

The Red Foxes held a 7-3 lead after three quarters, and Teichmann and senior defender Bill Kolar (West Islip, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the fourth period for the Red Foxes. For Kolar, the goal was the first of his career.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Red Foxes, five of which came in the final quarter as the Marist lead never fell below four goals. The Red Foxes outshot Mount St. Mary's by a 45-30 margin, including a 38-17 count in the first three quarters. Marist also held a 31-29 edge in ground balls.

O'Hara and VanHall joined Teichmann as Red Foxes who finished with multi-point games, as O'Hara had a goal and two assists and VanHall had a goal and an assist. Teichmann and senior midfielder Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) tied for the team lead with six shots on goal, and Detelj also scored a goal in the second quarter.

Marist will return to action on Sunday with a MAAC contest at Wagner at 3 p.m.
