BUFFALO, N.Y.-Canisius' Kevin Reimer went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs in game one, while Marist's Erik Supplee struck out seven batters in game two as the teams split a MAAC doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. Canisius won the first game 8-6, while Marist took the second 11-8.
The Griffs (5-21, 1-4 MAAC) broke a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one. Ryan Asis led off with a triple and scored on a Reimer sacrifice fly. Branson Joseph followed with a single and scored on a Connor Burke double to make the score 8-6.
The Red Foxes (4-16, 1-4 MAAC) had a runner on first with one out in the ninth, when Canisius brought closer Mike Bax into the game. The senior got Justin Lepore to ground into a double play to preserve the win.
Sophomore Aaron Boag (right) picked up the victory on the hill after pitching three scoreless innings in relief. Classmate Dan Clifford started the game and allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out three and scattered four hits.
Two Canisius errors led to four Marist runs in the first inning. Keith Glasser delivered a two-run double with two outs to give the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead.
Trailing 6-2, Canisius used four extra-base hits, three of which came with two outs, to tie the score in the fifth frame. Ian Choy led off with a double and scored later on Reimer triple. Joseph and Burke followed with consecutive doubles before Marist's Tom Close got the last out.
Marist started game two with a walk and four straight singles to take a 4-0 cushion. Travis Musolf led off the game with a walk, while Max Most and Pat Feeney provided RBI base hits. Canisius came back with a run in the bottom of the frame when Reimer scored on a Burke groundout.
Ryan Gauck made the score 5-1 in the third with an RBI single that plated Lepore. The Red Foxes broke through for three runs in the sixth to take a commanding 8-1 cushion. Trailing 11-2, Canisius posted six runs in its final at-bat with the help of a two-run homer by Joseph and a two-run double by Paul Panik.
Supplee went 5.1 innings and surrendered six hits and no earned runs before leaving the game after getting injured on a play at the plate in the bottom of the sixth.
The teams will finish the series at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Demske Sports Complex.
