April 1, 2007

Final Stats

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team earned its second straight victory on Saturday, a 12-5 road triumph over Wagner in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League contest. Junior midfielder Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) scored three goals and senior midfielder Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) registered three points on the strength of two goals and an assist. Marist now stands at 2-6 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play.

The Red Foxes got on the scoreboard early, as freshman attacker Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) scored the first of his two goals just 1:24 into the game. Detelj's goal with 10:48 left in the first quarter put Marist up 2-0. After Wagner's Josh Hamilton scored to cut the Marist lead to 2-1 midway through the period, Detelj's second goal was the first of seven straight goals the Red Foxes scored. Marist took a 9-2 lead into halftime, and held an 11-3 edge through three periods before the Red Foxes went heavily to their bench. Head Coach James Simpson lauded the play of reserves Tim Capalbo (Brewster, N.Y.). Freshman midfielder Kyle Reny (Marblehead, Mass.) scored his first career goal in the closing seconds.

The Red Foxes held a 37-25 advantage in shots and a 26-15 edge in ground balls while committing just 13 turnovers to Wagner's 20. Teichmann led Marist with six shots and four shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with five ground balls, and also made five saves to earn the victory. Penner played the first half before giving way junior Terrence Dempsey (Lynbrook, N.Y.) in the third quarter and freshman Sam Altiero (Randolph, N.J.) in the fourth. Both Dempsey and Altiero made two saves apiece.

Wagner fell to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC. Andrew Daly led the Seahawks with two goals, and Evan Shull had two assists. Goalkeeper Ian Gallagher made 16 saves.

Marist will return to action on Saturday with a MAAC game against Canisius at Dietz Stadium in Kingston at 1 p.m.
