April 21, 2007

Final Stats

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Senior Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist and Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) stopped 15 shots in goal for the Marist Men's Lacrosse team in a 9-6 victory over Manhattan on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Red Foxes improve to 5-8 overall and 4-2 in the MAAC, while the Jaspers fell to 6-7 and 3-3 in the league.

Manhattan opened the scoring in the contest with a goal by Jeremy Marrano just 15 seconds into the contest. Marist would answer with two straight, on tallies by Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Detelj. Matthew Ryan tied the game for Manhattan, before Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) scored with 12 seconds left in the first quarter to give Marist a 3-2 lead after the opening period.

The Jaspers tied the game with 12:34 left in the second quarter at 3-3 on Marrano's second tally of the game, but that would be as close as Manhattan would get the rest of the game. The Red Foxes closed out the half by scoring the last three goals. The two teams played an even second half with Manhattan scoring twice in the final five minutes to close the deficit to three goals.

Marist had three players score two goals in the game, with Detelj, Santavicca and O'Hara each finding the back of the net twice. Detelj and Santavicca each recorded an assist and senior Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) posted two helpers in the contest.

Penner made the 15 stops and was nearly unbeatable down the stretch, making several saves from close range. He also scooped four ground balls in the game to lead the team. Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) picked up three ground balls and won seven of the 16 draws he took.

For the game Marist was successful on 10 of 17 clearing attempts. The Jaspers held the advantage in shots in the contest 38-32, ground balls 22-21 and had three fewer turnovers.

The win snaps a two game losing streak for the Foxes, who were coming off a 13-7 road loss at Providence. Marist will return to action on Wednesday, April 25 when it hosts MAAC foe Siena. Face-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Gartland Athletic Field.
