POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-5 loss to first-place Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League contest on Wednesday at Gartland Athletic Field. Sophomore midfielder Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Red Foxes, who fell to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in MAAC play. Siena improved to 10-4 overall and 7-0 in the MAAC, clinching first place in the regular season with the triumph.
Junior attackman Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) and freshman attackman Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) each added a goal and an assist for the Red Foxes. Freshman attackman Kevin Zorovich (Massapequa, N.Y.) also scored a goal, while senior midfielder Keith Detelj (Sayville, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) had one assist apiece.
The contest was low scoring in the beginning, as Teichmann scored the game's first goal with 6:20 left in the first quarter. Siena tied the game with 1:06 left in the period off a goal by Chris Zarins. After goals by Matt Donovan and Shaun Dunn 13 seconds apart gave Siena a 4-2 lead in the second quarter, Marist answered with goals by Santavicca and Zorovich to tie the game at four apiece heading into halftime.
The Saints held the Red Foxes to just one goal in the second half, and none in the final 24 minutes as Siena scored the game's final five goals to break open a 5-5 tie. Donovan paced Siena with four goals and two assists, and Dunn finished with three goals and two assists.
Siena outshot Marist by a 36-25 margin, including a 30-16 count in the final three quarters. Teichmann led the Red Foxes with seven shots. Marist held a 29-25 edge in ground balls, with junior midfielder Lou Aboyoun (Wayne, N.J.) leading the way with four. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Red Foxes.
Marist will conclude its regular season with a conference clash against VMI on Saturday at Gartland Athletic Field at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Red Foxes will honor their senior class.
