POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Freshman attacker Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) scored four goals and junior attacker Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) had five points as the Marist men's lacrosse team won its third straight game, earning a 14-11 win over Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Lacrosse League contest at Gartland Athletic Field. The total of 14 goals is Marist's best of the season and second-highest single-game mark in the last six years.
Teichmann now has 10 goals in his last three games. VanHall scored three goals and had a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) added a goal and two assists, while sophomore attacker Nick Hautau (South Salem, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored twice apiece.
Teichmann opened the scoring with an assist from VanHall 3:58 into the contest. After a goal from Santavicca put the Red Foxes up 2-0, Canisius' Brad Favero got the Golden Griffins on the board with 7:53 left in the first quarter. However, the Red Foxes answered that tally with six of their own, including goals from Teichmann and VanHall within 49 seconds after Favero scored for Canisius.
The Red Foxes led 8-4 at halftime, and goals from Santavicca and VanHall gave Marist a six-goal advantage. Canisius then scored six of the next seven goals, and Michael Blocho's third of the day brought the Golden Griffins to within 11-10 with 9:03 remaining. However, Canisius was never able to tie the game, as the Red Foxes used goals from VanHall, Teichmann and O'Hara to put the game away.
Teichmann led Marist with nine shots, six of them being shots on goal. Midfielders Lou Aboyoun (Wayne, N.J.) and Nick Andre (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had three ground balls apiece for the Red Foxes. Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) stopped eight shots.
Canisius outshot Marist by a 33-32 margin, including a count of 21-10 in the second half. The Golden Griffins also held a 25-20 edge in ground balls. Blocho led the Golden Griffins with four points. Tom Hensel and Kevin Ross - the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year - each finished with two goals and an assist.
Marist improved to 3-6 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-4 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will return to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at Lafayette.
