Marist-Canisius Box Score
Marist-Manhattan Box Score
FISHKILL, N.Y.-The Marist baseball team knocked off Canisius Friday morning by a score of 5-1, before being eliminated by Manhattan 3-2 in the loser's bracket of the MAAC Tournament in Fishkill, N.Y. The Red Foxes finish their season at 21-32 overall.
Freshman shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior catcher Keith Glasser (Rensselaer, N.Y.) had two hits each, while sophomore designated hitter Max Most (Port Washington, N.Y.) had two RBIs.
Second baseman Ryan Asis had two hits for Canisius, which finished its season 20-35.
Marist sophomore left hander Josh Rickards (6-4, Glenolden, Pa.) took the win in the Canisius game, hurling six innings and allowing three hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and three walks. Senior right hander Robert Ryan (Roslindale, Mass.) got his first save of the year, tossing a perfect ninth frame. Canisius starter Alex MacKenzie (4-9) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
The Red Foxes hoped to advance to Saturday's championship game with Le Moyne (1 p.m.) with a win over Manhattan. However, the Jaspers victimized the Red Foxes' bullpen for the second consecutive evening, hanging three runs and four hits on Marist senior reliever Bobby Hastry (Maynard, Mass.) who dropped to 0-2 on the season. He also struck out one and walked one.
Manhattan starter Tom Costigan (8-3) claimed the victory, going eight and one-third innings with two runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Brian Pendergast claimed his fifth save of the season, giving up two hits over the last two-thirds of an inning with one strikeout.
Marist jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the game's first six innings before a two hour, 21 minute lightning delay brought the contest to a halt. The Red Foxes got those runs on a pair of RBIs by freshman first baseman Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.).
Manhattan did its damage off Hastry in its first at-bat following the delay, setting the stage for a wild ninth inning. After a one-out walk by Gauck, sophomore Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) came on to pinch run. Redshirt sophomore third baseman Kenny Anderson then moved Meyer over to second with an infield single to give the Red Foxes runners on first and second with just one out.
After a strikeout, senior shortstop Matthew Lesyk (Abbottsford, British Columbia) lined a sharp single to Manhattan center fielder Mike Garcia, who threw a strike home in an attempt to cut down Meyer attempting to score from second. Meyer appeared to beat the ball to the plate but was ruled out by the home plate umpire after he made contact with Manhattan catcher Nick Derba on the play. The ruling was that Meyer was out as a result of the NCAA's "Collision Rule" (Rule 8, Section 7), which dictates that the runner may not use flagrant contact to maliciously dislodge the ball. The penalty for such an act is that the runner is declared out even if the fielder loses possession of the ball.
Senior second baseman Pat Feeney (New City, N.Y.), senior designated hitter Justin Lepore (Madison, Conn.) and Anderson all had two hits, while sophomore right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) scored two runs. Marist freshman starter Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) had a strong outing, hurling six scoreless innings before the delay, allowing just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
