Final Stats
FISHKILL, N.Y.-Marist redshirt sophomore third baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) laced an RBI double to the right center gap in the ninth inning to propel the Marist baseball team past Army 7-6 at the second annual WPDH Hudson Valley Baseball Classic Wednesday at Dutchess Stadium. The event drew 3,016 fans from around the area.
Marist improved to 13-26 overall with the win and swept the season series with the Black Knights (20-20-1).
Marist senior reliever Robert Ryan (2-1, Roslindale, Mass.) secured his second victory of the season, throwing two-thirds of an inning and allowing two hits with one strikeout. Army reliever Austin Grimes dropped to 1-2 after surrendering five hits and four earned runs in just one inning of work. Marist senior Erik Supplee (Williamsburg, Va.) picked up his first save of the season and just the second of his career after Army picked up just one hit off him in the ninth.
The double was Anderson's second of the game and third hit of the evening, which tied him with freshman shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) for top team honors. Sophomore right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) also had a big three-run triple in the top of the eighth that gave Marist a 6-1 lead. Sophomore left fielder Max Most (Port Washington, N.Y.) also knocked in a pair of runs with a two-run single earlier in the inning.
Army designated hitter Kyle Fleming had three hits to lead Army's cause, while second baseman Barnes Connell had a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth, which saw the Black Knights tie the game at six to set the stage for Anderson's heroics off ace Army closer Milan Dinga.
Despite both teams combining for 11 runs in the eighth inning, the contest's first seven innings yielded just one Army run. Marist senior starter Bobby Hastry (Maynard, Mass.) had easily his best outing of the season, holding the Black Knights to just four hits and run with seven strikeouts and no walks over seven innings. Likewise, the Army triumvirate of Ben Mayhew, Steven Cummings and Tyler Anderegg allowed the Red Foxes just five hits over the contest's first seven frames.
The Red Foxes will host New York Tech Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the McCann Baseball Field.
