POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Rising red-shirt junior guard Kaylen Gregory (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) will be representing the Virgin Islands in the 2007 FIBA Americas championship. The Virgin Islands will open the tournament against the United States on Thursday at 11 p.m. on ESPN Classic.
The Virgin Islands are competing in Pool B along with Canada, Brazil and Venezuela. The Virgin Islands will face Canada on Friday at 6 p.m., Brazil on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Venezuela on Sunday at 4 p.m. The Saturday and Sunday games will be televised live on NBA TV, while the Canada game will be replayed on NBA TV at 1 a.m. Saturday.
Pool A consists of Argentina, Puerto Rico, Panama, Uruguay and Mexico. The top four finishers in each pool advance to the second round of the tournament, and the tournament's gold and silver medalists qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Teams that finish third through fifth will participate in a 12-team tournament next July to determine the final three spots in the Olympics.
