POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Three prominent figures in the success of Marist Athletics will be inducted into the Sports Museum of Dutchess County. Former coach and administrator Mike Malet, current men's tennis coach Tim Smith and longtime Red Fox Club member Mike Vitale. Malet, Smith and Vitale will be honored during a dinner and ceremony at the Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Malet was the Red Foxes' first varsity football coach, guiding the Red Foxes from 1978-88. He also served as the team's men lacrosse coach from 1984-90. He was also an assistant coach on the football staff for eight years prior to his appointment as head coach. Malet later served the department as Assistant Athletics Director and Interim Athletics Director. Following his departure from Marist, he has been influential in helping the game of lacrosse grow at the youth and scholastic levels.
Smith has led the Red Foxes' men's tennis team to six NCAA Tournament appearances. He has compiled a record of 184-63 with the Red Foxes, and is in his 12th year guiding the team. Smith came to Marist following a four-year run at Dutchess Community College in which he posted a record of 80-4. He has been influential in the growth of tennis in Dutchess County by coordinating local tournaments, volunteering to the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club Junior Davis Cup committee and running clinics for charity organizations.
Vitale has served on the board of directors for the Red Fox Club, the official booster club of Marist athletics, since 1997. From 2003-04, Vitale was the club's Vice President. He has been responsible for a considerable amount of the club's fundraising by being chairman of the club's Super Bowl Raffle since 2000. Vitale has also been chairman of the Red Fox Den Buffet Committee since 1998. He has also been a longtime youth baseball coach in the community, volunteering his time to coach and manage youth league teams and local All-Star squads.
