POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team won its third straight match on Saturday afternoon, defeating Canisius 3-1 (14-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22) at the McCann Center. The Red Foxes hit .270 as a team with sophomore Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) leading the way with 18 kills and a .292 hitting percentage.

With the win, Marist is now a half-match behind Iona for the fourth seed in the upcoming MAAC tournament. Junior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) had 14 kills in the match and hit .229. Sophomore Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) had a balanced match with eight kills and four blocks. Setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had a double-double with 47 assists and 11 digs. Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) led Marist with 20 digs.

Marist (11-13, 6-5 MAAC) started the match strong, taking the first five points on kills by Foss, Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio). Canisius responded by winning the next nine points on the serve of Carley Youngman to go ahead 9-5. After Schaefer and Burton combined for a block to make the score 10-6, the Golden Griffins went on a 10-0 run to go ahead 20-6. Canisius hit .357 in the first set and won it easily 25-14.

The Red Foxes responded in a big way in the second set. Marist had 17 kills with no errors and hit .607 in the set. Ahead 20-15, the Red Foxes pushed ahead 23-17 with a block by Schmid and Jan. Foss got kills on Marist's next two points to win the set 25-18 and even the match at 1-1.

Canisius (13-7, 9-3 MAAC) took its only lead in the third set at 1-0 with a kill by Brittany Gerde. Marist came back on a Golden Griffins error and Foss kill to take a 2-1 lead. The Red Foxes grew their lead to five at 8-3 getting a kills by Schmid and Foss and a block by Foss and Schmid. Canisius battled back and got within three at 13-10 with a block by Gerde and Layne Adams. Marist responded with kills by Schultze and Foss, as well as an Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) service ace to go ahead 16-10. The Golden Griffins would only get as close as four points the rest of the set, with Schultze capping the set with a kill to give Marist the 25-20 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Marist came out firing in set four, using five points off the serve of Amber Lopez (Perrysburg, Ohio) to go ahead 9-3. Canisius battled back to get within one point, 9-8, with two aces by Kaela Glenn. Behind 10-8, the Golden Griffins tied the set at 10-10 with kills by Michelle Godfrey and Renee Lettow. With the match tied at 14-14, the Red Foxes went ahead 17-14 on back to back solo blocks by Schaefer and Schmid. The lead grew to four at 20-16 with a Schmid kill. Marist earned its first match point at 24-21 with a Schultze kill. Canisius fought off the match point with a Gerde kill. Marist won the set 25-22 and subsequently the match 3-1 on a Canisius attack error.

The Red Foxes outhit Canisius .270-.232 and also held an 8.0-7.0 advantage in blocks. The Golden Griffins had a 58-54 advantage in digs. Lettow led Canisius with 13 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Gerde and Danielle Brawn each had 10 digs. Setter Janelle Davis had 36 assists while Carley Youngman led the Golden Griffins with 21 digs.

Marist continues its four-match homestand on Sunday against Niagara. First serve at the McCann Center is scheduled for 2 p.m.
