Foss And Schultze Lead Marist To Four-Set Win At Loyola

BALTIMORE, M.D. - After dropping the first set Sunday afternoon at Loyola, the Marist volleyball team combined to hit .248 in the next three sets to take down the Greyhounds 19-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-21 at Reitz Arena. The Red Foxes hit .273 in the deciding set. Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) and Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) each had 16 kills to lead the Marist offense.

Foss was also one of four Red Foxes in double-figures in digs on Sunday. The sophomore had 14 digs for a double-double. Freshman Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) led Marist with 17 digs. Senior Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) had 14 digs and Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) had 11.

After allowing Loyola to hit .273 in a 25-19 first set win, Marist came alive in the second set. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 9-4 lead highlighted by two Schmid service aces. The Red Foxes continued to pour it on, growing the lead to 13 at 20-7 with a Campbell service ace and a Schultze kill. Marist closed out the set with a Foss kill, taking the second set 25-11. The Red Foxes hit .214 in the second set and forced the Greyhounds to a -.034 hitting percentage.

Marist (7-12, 2-4 MAAC) continued to improve its hitting in the third set. A balanced attack from Foss, Schultze, and Schmid gave the Red Foxes an early 10-8 lead. After a Rachel Schillinger kill got Loyola within a point at 10-9, an Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.) kill kickstarted a 9-1 run that gave Marist a 19-10 lead. Just as in the second set, Foss clinched the third set for Marist with a kill to give the Red Foxes a 25-15 win in the third set and a 2-1 advantage. The Red Foxes hit .242 in the third set and held Loyola to a .103 percentage.

Loyola (4-14, 1-5 MAAC) took the advantage early in the fourth set as Nicole Scimeme had six kills en route to a 9-3 team. Marist was not deterred and went on a 5-0 run to get within a point, 13-12. The Greyhounds led for much of the set but consecutive kills by Schmid and freshman Amber Lopez (Perrysburg, Ohio) service ace to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Marist outhit Loyola .207-.123 in the match. The Red Foxes also held a 72-66 advantage in digs. Scimeme led Loyola with 13 kills and hit .379 in the match and had 11 digs for a double-double. Libero Brittany Born led all players with 21 digs.

The Red Foxes return to the McCann Center on Saturday, Oct. 11 with a 2 p.m. match against the Rider Broncs.
