Marist Wins Fifth Straight, Defeats Loyola 3-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team won its fifth-straight match on Saturday, defeating Loyola 3-1 (25-23, 25-27, 25-20, 25-17) at the McCann Center. With Iona's loss to Manhattan, the Red Foxes are now in fourth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with an 8-5 record.

Marist (13-13, 8-5 MAAC) was led by sophomore Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) added 13 kills. Setter Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) had a double-double with 43 assists and 11 digs. Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) tallied 23 digs as Marist held a 77-62 advantage in digs over the Greyhounds.

Loyola (6-22, 2-11 MAAC) held the early advantage in the first set, as a block by Kristen Muscarella and Rachel Schillinger gave the Greyhounds a 9-4 lead. The lead grew to six at 17-11 with consecutive kills by Nina Camaioni. Trailing 19-12, the Red Foxes went on a 8-1 run powered by two kills each by Foss and Schultze. The two teams traded points until 23-23 when a Foss kill gave the Red Foxes a set point opportunity. Marist took the first set 25-23 on a block by Jan and Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas).

After getting behind 4-3 in the second set, a Foss kill allowed Marist to tie the set at 4-4. The Red Foxes then ran off six straight points off the serve of Amber Lopez (Perrysburg, Ohio) to go ahead 9-4. Loyola used a 4-1 run to tie the set at 15-15. Marist took the lead back at 20-17 with a Schmid kill. The Greyhounds responded again with a 5-1 run to go ahead 22-21. Just as in the first set, the two teams traded points until 25-25 when a Marist error gave Loyola a set point. The Greyhounds took the set 27-25 on a Christina Greenup kill.

With the match tied at 1-1, Marist came right out of the gates and went ahead 9-4 in the third set. Ahead 9-6, the Red Foxes ran off four straight points on kills by Jan, Schultze, and Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) as well as a block by Burton and Schultze to go ahead 13-6. Loyola came back with kills by Greenup and Anastasia Collins to get within two at 16-14. This was as close as the Greyhounds would get in the set. Behind kills by Schultze and Burton, Marist took the third set 25-20.

The Red Foxes kept the momentum in the fourth set, taking a quick 7-1 lead. Marist dominated the set, hitting a match-high .310 and held Loyola to a .031 hitting percentage. Ahead 22-17, Marist took the last three points on a block by Burton and Schaefer, as well as kills by Schultze and Schaefer to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.

In a match that featured long rallies and good back-row defense, Marist outhit Loyola .162-.084. The Red Foxes' front row defense shined with a season-high 11 blocks to the Greyhounds' eight. Greenup led Loyola with 13 kills. Libero Brittany Born led all players with 24 digs while Schillinger and Karlee Woodward each had four blocks.
