Red Foxes Fall In Season Opener To #14 Delaware 12-6

NEWARK, DEL. - Trailing 4-0 after one quarter and 7-0 6:39 into the second, the Marist men's lacrosse team made a game of it against #14 Delaware, outscoring the Fighting Blue Hens 6-5 the rest of the way in a 12-6 loss at Rullo Stadium Saturday afternoon. Freshman Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) led Marist with four goals and also added an assist in his Red Fox debut.

Junior midfielder Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and freshman midfielder Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) also tallied goals for the Red Foxes on Saturday. Senior Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) led Marist with three assists. Junior goaltender Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 17 saves in the game and led the Red Foxes with six ground balls. Senior Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added five ground balls while winning seven face-offs.

Delaware (3-0) dominated the first quarter, getting two goals from Curtis Dickson and one goal each from Anthony Ruiz and Martin Cahill to take a 4-0 lead. Marist was held to just four shots in the first 15 minutes, and could not convert on three extra-man opportunities. The Blue Hens scored three more goals to start the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

The Red Foxes got their first goal of the game with 9:53 to go in the first half, as O'Hara fed Santavicca for a man-up goal. Needle won the ensuing face-off, with Zindel scoring his first career goal 18 seconds later to make the score 7-2. Zindel and Dickson would trade goals the rest of the quarter as Delaware took a 9-3 lead into halftime.

Marist (0-1) took the early momentum in the second half, as Zindel scored his third goal 15 seconds into the third quarter to make the score 9-4. Delaware would answer with a goal from Cam Howard at the 10:01 mark to make the score 10-4. The Red Foxes would make a late charge in the fourth quarter, as Walsh and Zindel scored eight seconds apart to make the score 10-6 with 10:54 to go. Delaware would hold Marist scoreless the rest of the way, adding two more goals to get the 12-6 win.

Delaware held Marist to 28 shots in the game, while taking 47 shots of their own. The Blue Hens also held a 45-27 ground ball advantage. Marist went 1-for-10 in extra-man opportunites, while Delaware scored four goals on two extra-man opportunities. Delaware's Curtis Dickson led all scorers with five goals and eight points, as Cam Howard and Anthony Ruiz each tallied a pair of goals.

Marist will play their first game at the renovated Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on March 8th when they host Binghamton at 1 p.m.
