CLINTON, S.C. - The Marist baseball team picked up its first victory of the season on Saturday, as the Red Foxes earned a 15-13 triumph at Presbyterian. Second baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.), catcher Bryce Nugent (Binghamton, N.Y.) and shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) all homered for the Red Foxes, who now stand at 1-4 on the season.
Marist struck first, scoring five runs in the third on the strength of a three-run homer by Nugent and a two-run shot by Meyer. The Red Foxes led 9-2 after their half of the fourth, but Presbyterian stormed back and tied the game at nine apiece after five. However, Marist battled back in the sixth and took the lead for good on a two-run single by left fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.).
The Red Foxes added a single run in the seventh and three in the eighth, with designated hitter Zach Starkey (Aurora, Ill.) belting a two-run single. Presbyterian battled back for a run in the eighth and put together a three-run ninth, but the Red Foxes were able to hold on.
Sophomore B.J. Martin (Manalapan, N.J.) got the start and pitched into the fifth, giving up six runs in 4.1 innings. Martin recorded five strikeouts against just one walk. Senior left-hander Tom Close (Devon, Pa.) got the victory in relief, and the Red Foxes received a strong relief outing from freshman right-hander Brendan Chapin (South Weymouth, Mass.) who gave up just one run in 2.2 innings.
