Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist and Quinnipiac men's lacrosse teams met at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field Wednesday night in the Joe Capalbo Memorial Game. The contest honored the memory of Joe Capalbo, Sr., who died from lymphoma this past September. His sons, Tim and Joe, played against each other in the game. Tim Capalbo (Brewster, N.Y.) is a sophomore defender for the Red Foxes, while Joe Capalbo is a senior midfielder for Quinnipiac. The Bobcats won the game 10-7.
Marist (0-3) was led by freshman Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) added a pair of goals. Senior Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) had two points with a goal and an assist, as Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) also tallied a goal. Junior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 11 saves in the defeat.
The game was back and forth at the onset. Quinnipiac tallied the first goal 4:46 into the game when A.J. Alessi put in a shot from Gary Messina on a man-up situation. Marist answered with Zindel's first tally with 5:49 to go in the first quarter. The Bobcats took the lead back on a Sean Endicott goal with 1:25 to go in the first quarter to go ahead 2-1 after the first 15 minutes.
Quinnipiac went ahead 3-2 on a Jack Oppenheimer goal with 5:41 to go in the second quarter. The Red Foxes would come back with goals from Zindel and VanHall to take their first lead, 4-3, with 2:39 to go in the first half. The lead would not last very long, as the Bobcats' Mitch Cooper scored with 26 seconds left to tie the game at 4-4 at halftime.
The Bobcats took the lead to start the second half, as Endicott scored his second goal of the game 1:45 into the third quarter to give Quinnipiac a 5-4 lead. Marist would take the lead once again as Santavicca and Zindel tallied goals 24 seconds apart to give the Red Foxes a 6-5 lead. This was the last lead for Marist, as Quinnipiac scored three straight times to end the third quarter and take an 8-6 lead. Teichmann scored four minutes into the fourth quarter to get the Red Foxes within a goal at 8-7, but Messina scored his only goal of the game with 4:36 left in the game to put Quinnipiac ahead for good.
Each team tallied 28 shots in the game, with Quinnipiac holding a 21-14 shots on goal advantage. The Bobcats also held a 28-25 ground balls advantage. Senior Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) won 11 of the 21 faceoffs in the game for Marist. The Red Foxes were hampered by seven penalties in the game, as the Bobcats were only called for two penalties. Endicott led Quinnipiac (5-0) with three goals, as Garrett Kerr added two goals.
Marist will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it opens MAAC Lacrosse League play at VMI. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
