Marist Drops Conference Opener At VMI 9-7

LEXINGTON, VA. - Playing in their MAAC Lacrosse League Opener, the Marist men's lacrosse team fell to the Keydets of Virginia Military Institute 9-7 at Foster Stadium on Saturday. Freshmen Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) each scored twice for the Red Foxes but could not overcome five goals from VMI's Kevin Hill.

Senior Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.), junior Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), and sophomore Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made eight saves in the loss as Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) won 11 of the 16 faceoffs he was in.

VMI (2-5, 1-0 MAAC) opened the scoring on Saturday as Tim Moran scored 3:48 into the game to give the Keydets an early 1-0 lead. Marist would get on the board at the 5:51 mark with Zindel's first goal. O'Hara would answer Zindel's goal with his first of the season with 4:13 to go in the first quarter, putting the Red Foxes ahead 2-1. The lead would not last long, as Kevin Hill scored for VMI 12 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. Marist outshot the Keydets 16-8 in the first quarter but would not come out ahead as Jamie Wulforst scored with 1:02 left in the quarter to put VMI ahead 3-2 after the first 15 minutes.

Francis scored his first goal of the season with 10:46 to go in the second quarter to pull the Red Foxes even with VMI 3-3. Hill broke the tie with his second goal at the 2:28 mark of the quarter to put the Keydets ahead 4-3. He would score again 22 seconds later to make the score 5-3. Wulforst then scored with eight seconds left in the half to put VMI ahead 6-3 at the half. VMI outshot Marist 13-4 in the second quarter.

Marist (0-4, 0-1 MAAC) took control of much of the third quarter, as goals from Zindel and Santavicca got the Red Foxes within one goal, 6-5, with 5:08 to go in the period. Once again, Hill would tally for VMI to make the score 7-5 after the third. The Red Foxes outshot the Keydets 18-4 in the final quarter, but could only get two goals from Walsh as VMI got tallies from Moran and Hill to win 9-7.

Sean McCoy made 17 saves for the Keydets as they moved to 2-5 on the season and 1-0 in MAAC play. Each team recorded 34 ground balls in the game. Marist was 9-12 in clears with VMI going 15-for-22 in clear opportunities.

The Red Foxes return to action on Tuesday night when they go to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina. The Tar Heels are ranked #3 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Division I media poll. Gametime is scheduled for 7 p.m.
