Box Score
FAIRFAX, Va. - The Marist baseball team knocked off George Mason, 5-4, on Thursday in what was their second consecutive one-run win. The Red Foxes (3-7) used four consecutive Patriot errors in a four-run fifth inning en route to the win. Sophomore Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) picked up his first collegiate win, going 5.2 innings and giving up three runs.
Marist got on the board in the top of the second inning. Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) singled with two outs, and then proceeded to swipe second base. Shane Kinglsey (Beacon Falls, Conn.) followed with an RBI single that gave the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.
The score held at 1-0 until the fifth inning. In that fifth inning, the Red Foxes used four straight two-out errors to push across four runs and give them a 5-0 lead. Marist did not have a hit in that inning.
Cary (1-0) was relieved by Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.). Peterson went on to throw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief after George Mason had made the score 5-3.
The Patriots were able to push across one more run in the eighth off Rob Glowacki (Red Bank, N.J.), but sophomore Eric Alessio (Nyack, N.Y.) came in and shut-down Mason to nail down a four out save. It was his second save of the season.
The Red Foxes had five hits on the day. Pacione, Kingsley, Zach Starkey (Aurora, Ill.), Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.), and Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) had the Marist hits.
Scott Krieger went 3-for-4 with two runs to pace George Mason at the dish, and Kris Mengle took the loss on the mound. He gave up five runs (one earned) in 5 innings.
