Final Stats

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Marist men's lacrosse team ended their current road trip Tuesday night with a 12-3 loss at #4 North Carolina Monday night. Freshman attack Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) was a part of all three goals for the Red Foxes, tallying one goal and assisting on the other two.

Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) and Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) also scored for Marist on Monday. Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with seven shots in the game, as senior midfield Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) added six shots. Zindel led Marist with six ground balls with junior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) adding four ground balls to his eight saves.

The Tar Heels came out of the gates firing in the first quarter as Rob Driscoll scored 1:20 into the game. Marist hung with North Carolina for much of the quarter with 10 shots to the Tar Heels' 12. With 2:43 to go in the first quarter, Ryan Flanagan started a three-goal barrage that put North Carolina ahead 4-0 at the end of the quarter.

The Red Foxes would get on the board in the second quarter. Taking advantage of a 3:00 major penalty, Sharkey and Zindel both scored man-up nine seconds apart to get Marist within two, 4-2, with 13:51 to go in the half. The Tar Heels came back to score the next three goals to go ahead 7-2 with 7:19 to go in the half. VanHall would try and get Marist back in the game with his goal at the 4:04 mark to make the score 7-3, but North Carolina proved to be too strong and came out ahead 12-3.

North Carolina (6-1) was led by Bart Wagner's four goals and two assists. Eight other Tar Heels scored in the game. The Tar Heels outshot Marist 44-34 and held a 52-33 ground ball advantage. With the loss, the Red Foxes are now 0-5 on the season.

Marist returns to Poughkeepsie on Saturday to take on Saint Joseph's in MAAC Lacrosse League play. Gametime at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is set for 1 p.m.
