CLINTON, S.C. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 7-6 loss to Presbyterian on Sunday in the rubber game of a three-game series. Sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.) finished with two hits apiece for the Red Foxes, who fell to 1-5 on the season.
The Red Foxes got on the board first with two runs in the top of the second. The first game when Gallic's RBI fielder's choice plated Gauck, and the second came when junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
After Presbyterian cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Gauck's RBI single in the top of the third expanded Marist's lead to 3-1. Presbyterian scored again in the bottom of the third, but Marist made it 5-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-run single from freshman third baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.).
However, Presbyterian scored twice in the bottom of the fourth and three times in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. Marist made it 7-6 in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by McDonough, but the Red Foxes went down 1-2-3 in the eighth and ninth.
Sophomore lefty Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) got the start for the Red Foxes, pitching into the fifth inning. In four-plus innings officially, he surrendered six runs (four earned). Peterson was relieved by junior righty Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.), who didn't allow an earned run and had three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Junior right-hander Rob Glowacki (Red Bank, N.J.) then came in and struck out the only two batters he faced.
Marist will return to action next weekend, with a three-game series at Marshall. The first game is set for Friday at 3 p.m.
