Final Stats
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team fell to 0-3 in MAAC Lacrosse League play on Saturday with a 9-6 loss at Manhattan on Saturday. Senior Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with three goals.
Freshman Mike Parrinello (Babylon, N.Y.) and Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) each tallied a goal. Junior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 10 saves in the game and had eight ground balls.
The Jaspers controlled play early, as Salvatore Spatarella and Luke Dillilo each scored on man-up opportunities to take a 3-0 lead with 4:58 to go in the first quarter. Marist notched its first goal at the 3:45 mark as O'Hara beat Manhattan goalie John Geagan to cut the deficit to two. Walsh cut the lead to one before the end of the quarter with his fifth goal of the season.
Marist (0-8, 0-3) kept the momentum in the second quarter, as the Red Foxes got two goals from O'Hara and tallies from Parrinello and Santavicca to go ahead 6-3. The Red Foxes' defense stepped up in the quarter, allowing no goals on only six shots. Marist also got help from faceoff midfielder Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), who won four of the five faceoffs in the quarter and 13 of the 18 he was in on in the game.
Manhattan (2-5, 1-2) started a comeback in the third quarter, as Spatarella scored man-up to get the Jaspers within two, 6-4, 1:19 into the half. Dillilo added a tally with 1:16 to go in the third to pull Manhattan within one. The Jaspers tied the game at 6-6 with 11:44 to go in the fourth as Brian Wynne scored his second of three goals in the game. Mike Wilcox gave the Jaspers the lead with a goal at the 3:25 mark of the final quarter, as Manhattan added two more goals to win by three.
The Jaspers held a 31-26 advantage in shots and 37-35 edge in ground balls. Marist won 14 of the 19 faceoffs and converted 23 of 24 clears. Wynne led Manhattan with three goals and three assists. Spatarella also scored three goals, with Dillilo adding two.
The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday when they host the Lafayette Leopards. Gametime at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
