LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Sophomore left-hander Stephen Peterson (Danvers, Mass.) tossed a complete game, retiring the last 12 batters he faced as the Marist baseball team earned a 5-1 victory at Rider on Sunday. Peterson tossed a five-hitter and walked just two while striking out three, and he did not permit a hit over the final five innings.
Sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) continued his hot hitting by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. He led off the game with a triple and scored on a two-run single by freshman right fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.). In the ninth inning, Curylo's two-run single expanded Marist's lead to 4-1. He would score the game's final run on a double by freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.). Curylo finished with eight hits in the series.
Pacione went 3-for-4 for the Red Foxes, who pounded out 10 hits on the afternoon. Junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) added two hits and a run scored.
The victory improved Peterson's record to 1-1. Mike Thomas (1-3) took the loss for Rider, tossing seven innings and giving up two runs while striking out seven.
The Red Foxes improved to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Rider fell 11-10 overall and 3-3 in the MAAC.
Marist will return to action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. non-conference contest against Binghamton. The Red Foxes will return to MAAC play next weekend with a three-game series at Iona, with a Saturday doubleheader and a single game on Sunday.
