Final Stats
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Playing in a driving rainstorm, the Marist men's lacrosse team dropped a 5-1 decision to Binghamton in their first game at the newly renovated Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday. Freshman Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored the Red Foxes' lone goal of the game. Marist is now 0-2 this season.
After both teams played to a scoreless first quarter, the visiting Bearcats scored first with a goal from Kevin Joy with 8:31 to go in the second quarter. Binghamton would score again at the 3:48 mark when Drew Wichmann scored on an extra-man opportunity. Marist was outshot in the first half 18-9, as Binghamton added one more goal near the end of the half to go ahead 3-0.
Marist would control play in the third quarter, outshooting the Bearcats 8-4. Walsh scored the Red Foxes' lone goal with 8:17 remaining in the quarter, as the defense kept Binghamton off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period. Junior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) saved all four shots he was in the quarter to keep Marist in the game. Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) also kept the Red Foxes in the game at the face-off x, winning eight of the ten faceoffs and all five in the second half. Binghamton goalie Larry Kline took over in the fourth quarter, making five saves to keep Marist off the scoreboard. The Bearcats added two more tallies to win 5-1.
Binghamton outshot Marist 29-25 in the game. Marist, however, held a 23-12 ground ball advantage. Kline made 12 saves for the Bearcats as Penner made 11 for the Red Foxes.
Marist returns to Tenney Stadium on Wednesday when they take on Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
