FAIRFIELD, Conn..- The Marist women's lacrosse team won a tight 9-8 decision over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon. The Red Foxes (2-1) scored the last three goals of the game, with Jessica O'Brien (Wantagh, N.Y.) scoring the game-winner with 3:05 left. The win was Marist's second in a row and first on the road this season.
The first half saw both teams battling back and forth, with neither team building anything greater than a one goal lead. Sacred Heart went into halftime holding a 5-4 advantage.
In the second half, the Pioneers were able to build a two goal lead at 7-5 and 8-6 before Marist went on to score the game's final three goals.
With 17:33 left, Ali Carnabuci (Albertson, N.Y.) scored to cut the lead to one. Lindsey Diener (Nanuet, N.Y.) was credited with the assist. More then eleven minutes passed before Kate Noftsker (Needham, Mass.) found the back of the net after a pass from Lindsay Rinefierd (Smithtown, N.Y.) to tie the score (8-8).
O'Brien's game winner was her second goal of the game. The goal was assisted by Cristin Begley (Brookville, Md.).
Marist out-shot the Pioneers 19-8 in the second half and 31-21 for the game. O'Brien, Stephanie Garland (Long Valley, N.J.), and Carnabuci all had two goals. Kellie Considine (Wantagh, N.Y.), Kaitlyn O'Sullivan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Noftsker scored the three other Red Fox goals.
Liz Burkhard (Wantagh, N.Y.) got the win in net for Marist. She is now 2-1. The senior made eight saves on the afternoon.
Sacred Heart held a 20-19 advantage in ground balls, but Marist won the battle of draw controls, 12-7.
Diener was the only Red Fox to have two assists, as six of the nine Marist goals were assisted.
Marist will take a few days off before heading to Colorado to take on Denver and Colgate at the University of Denver over Spring Break (March 17 and 19).
