POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team suffered a 14-6 defeat to Canisius on Sunday at McCann Baseball Field, as the Golden Griffins completed a three-game series sweep. The Red Foxes fell to 11-16 overall and 5-7 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, while Canisius improved to 26-4 overall with a conference-leading mark of 8-1.
The Red Foxes scored the first three runs of the game. In the bottom of the second, junior designated hitter Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field. Marist added two runs in the third, when red-shirt junior first baseman Kenny Anderson (Randolph, N.J.) hit an RBI triple which plated sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.) before coming around to score on a wild pitch.
Canisius scored a single run in the fourth to cut Marist's lead to 3-1, and took the lead with a six-run sixth inning. Five of the Golden Griffins' runs in that inning came with two outs.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Red Foxes pushed across a run to cut Canisius' lead to 7-4. The Red Foxes then loaded the bases with nobody out, but were unable to push across any more runs.
Canisius then responded by scoring seven runs in the eighth to make the score 14-4. The Red Foxes score twice in the ninth on an RBI double by freshman Matthew Howard (Philadelphia, Pa.) and an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Ryan Gauck (Clifton Park, N.Y.). The double for Howard was the first hit of his collegiate career.
Left fielder Ian Choy had three hits for Canisius, while center fielder Branson Joseph and first baseman Connor Burke drove in three runs apiece.
Freshman left-hander Sean McKeown (Hillborough, N.J.) took the loss for Marist, falling to 1-2 on the season. Making his second start of the season, McKeown allowed four runs in 5.2 innings, two of which were earned. He allowed just one hit over the first three innings.
Marist will wrap up its seven-game homestand on Tuesday, when the Red Foxes take on Brown in a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. Both games are slated for seven innings.
