Final Stats
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team saw their winning streak get snapped in Loudonville, N.Y. on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Siena Saints 8-6 at the Siena Turf Field. Sophomore attack Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with two goals.
After Siena took six shots in the first 7:58, Marist took the lead on their first shot of the game. Freshman Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) put the ball in the net to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead with 7:02 left in the first quarter. Marist took a 2-0 lead when Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) rippled the net with 4:14 left in opening period. Siena got on the board with 1:01 left when Matt Girsh scored off an unsettled situation to get within a goal.
The Saints tied the game at two when Ryan Duggan scored in front of the net with 12:44 left in the half. The Marist defense was strong in the first half, anchored by junior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who made 13 saves in the opening half. Marist took the lead back when Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) assisted Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) to score on an open net to take a 3-2 lead with 5:02 to go in the second quarter.
After a failed clear by Marist, Girsh scored his second for the Saints from his knees with 29 seconds left in the half to tie the game at three. Marist had a chance to take the lead going into the locker room when Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) took a shot from behind his head with nine seconds left, only to have Brent Herbst make the save.
Marist (2-13, 2-5 MAAC) opened the second half by taking back the lead. Teichmann scored at the 10:18 mark on a cut to the cage to give the Red Foxes a 4-3 lead. After a Marist turnover, Siena tied the game at four on Girsh's third goal of the game with 9:02 left in the quarter. Marist had a chance to the lead back with seven minutes left when shots from Teichmann and VanHall could not get past Herbst of Siena. On the ensuing possession, John Rogener let loose a shot from the left wing that was saved by Penner. Siena would take their first lead of the game with 3:32 left in the third when Chris Zarins rippled the net for the Saints, giving them a 5-4 lead.
Siena (9-6, 3-4 MAAC) increased their lead to two, 6-4, when Shaun Dunn scored off a Kenny Mazzone pass with 13:10 left in the fourth quarter. Marist got within one as Teichmann scored man-up with 11:39 left. Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) won the ensuing face-off, and the Red Foxes had possession for the next two minutes. The Red Foxes had two shots at net, but a turnover gave Siena a clear. The Saints then had a man-up opportunity as Dan Lang (Northport, N.Y.) was whistled for an illegal body check. Duggan scored his second for the Saints man-up to give Siena a 7-5 lead with 8:33 to go in the game.
The Red Foxes would get back to within a goal as Walsh set up VanHall at the 7:44 mark to make the score 7-6, but that would be as close as they would get. Siena added one more goal with 2:33 left to ensure the win.
Siena outshot Marist 36-33 in the game, with each team scooping up 38 ground balls. Needle won 13 of the 18 face-offs in the game for Marist, including 5-of-6 in the fourth quarter. Penner made 17 saves for the Red Foxes, while Herbst made 13 for the Saints. The Red Foxes had 24 turnovers to Siena's 17.
Marist will close out the 2008 season at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against Wagner. Saturday's game will also be Senior Day for the eight Marist men's lacrosse seniors.
