Game Two Box Score
BRONX, N.Y.- The Marist softball team split a pair of games with Fordham at Bahoshy field in the Bronx on Wednesday afternoon. Annie Castellano (Hauppauge, N.Y.) hit a two-run homer in the opener, and the Red Foxes (18-23, 4-3 MAAC) went on to win 2-1. They fell 9-6 in game two. After being swept at Siena on April 13, Marist has now won six of eight games.
Castellano's homer was all the offense the Red Foxes would need in the opener. In the top of the first, reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week Jessica Green (Manassas, Va.,) singled with two outs, and Castellano followed with her second home run of the season to put the Red Foxes up 2-0.
Megan Rigos did the rest for Marist. The senior hurler went all seven and allowed four hits. She struck out six and walked just one. She has now won her last three decisions and is 13-10 on the year.
Fordham was able to cut the Marist lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. After a walk, Alisson Storc laced an RBI triple to right center to drive in the Rams' only run.
Marist out-hit Fordham 5-4 in the opener. Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.), Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.), Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.), Castellano, and Green had the Marist hits.
Storc had two hits to lead the Rams, and Allison Twaroski took the loss on the mound.
The second game had far more offense as the teams combined for 23 hits and 15 runs.
Fordham scored single runs in the first and second to go up 2-0, but Marist answered with three of their own in the top of the third. Pomes singled, and shortstop Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) reached on an error. After Pamela de la Llave (West Orange, N.J.) sacrificed the runners, Green followed with a three-run homer over the left field wall to give the Red Foxes a 3-2 lead.
The Marist lead was short lived as Fordham came back with four of their own in the bottom of the third to take a 6-3 lead. After both teams went quietly in the fourth, Marist came back to tie in the fifth. Giordano and de la Llave started the inning with singles, and the junior right fielder Green doubled them in. Castellano then singled to put runners on first and third, and after an out, Malloy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The designated player Lindsey Kinel delivered a game-tying single with one out but that would be it for the Red Foxes.
Fordham (28-23) scored two in the fifth and tacked on one in the sixth for the final margin.
Caitlin Carpentier (Andover, Mass.) started for Marist. She went the first three-plus innings and was charged with six runs (four earned). Heather Viola (East Meadow, Mass.) relieved Carpentier and took the loss in 1.1 innings work. She falls to 1-4 on the season. Rigos came on for the final 1.2 innings.
Beckah Wiggins came on in relief of Nicole Ayres and got the game two win for the Rams. Mary Beth Puccio, Stephanie Mott, Samantha Pellechio, and Storc all had two hits for Fordham in game two.
Green led Marist. She went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI's. De la Llave was the only other Red Fox with multiple hits.
Marist will host a pair of important MAAC doubleheaders this weekend. They will host first place Canisius on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., and second place Niagara on Sunday. Marist is currently in third place in the conference standings with the most games remaining on their conference schedule (9).
