POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Ryan Sharkey (Westfield, N.J.) scored four goals to lead the Marist men's lacrosse team to a 15-3 romp over Wagner at Tenney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game, Marist's eight seniors were honored by the Marist Athletic Department. The Red Foxes ended their 2008 season by winning three of their final four games.
The two teams traded goals to start the game before the Red Foxes ran off seven goals in a row to build a 9-2 lead with 6:23 left in the first half. Wagner scored their final goal of the contest to cut the Red Foxes lead to six, but Marist (3-13, 3-5 MAAC) went on to score the final six goals of the game.
Marist was a perfect 3-for-3 on man-up opportunities with goals coming from Matt McNerney (Homer, N.Y.).
Sharkey paced Marist with five total points and rookie Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) had a solid game as he scored two goals and assisted on another. Francis netted two for the Red Foxes. Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Zachary Walsh (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and senior Pete O'Hara (Babylon, N.J.) all had a goal and an assist.
Senior Dan Needle (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) won 13 of 20 face-offs and also scored his first goal of the season.
Senior Terrence Dempsey (Lynbrook, N.Y.) got the start in goal and made eight saves on the afternoon. His record improves to 1-1.
Marist picked up 23 ground balls compared to 20 for Wagner (0-14, 0-8 MAAC). The Red Foxes held a 38-33 advantage in shots.
Matt McVie made 13 saves for the Wagner in the loss.
