Final Stats
BUFFALO, N.Y. - Ahead 4-3 at halftime, the Marist men's lacrosse team was outscored 9-1 in the second half as it fell to Canisius 12-5 in Buffalo on Saturday. Sophomore Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) had a pair of goals to lead Marist.
Sharkey opened the game with his eighth goal of the season, as freshman Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) assisted on his man-up goal to gave Marist a 1-0 lead with 11:42 to go in the first quarter. Canisius would tie the game at the 9:02 mark, with Nick LoCoco tallying the first score for the Golden Griffins. Sharkey scored his second goal with 19 seconds remaining in the quarter to give Marist a 2-1 lead.
Pat VanHall (Fairport, N.Y.) scored man-up 28 seconds into the second quarter to put the Red Foxes' lead at 3-1. Marist got a goal from junior midfield Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) to keep the lead at two with the Red Foxes ahead 4-2. Cansius would close to within one at the end of the half, as Adam Jones scored with 1:31 left in the quarter to make the score 4-3. Canisius took advantage of a 1:00 major penalty on Zindel to score two man-upgoals to start the second half to take a 5-4 lead. The Golden Griffins added three more goals in the third quarter to take an 8-4 lead. Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) got Marist back on the board to start the fourth quarter, as Santavicca assisted on the Red Foxes' fifth goal with 12:52 left in the game. Dave Schaefer scored at the 10:59 mark to give the Golden Griffins' a 9-5 lead, and Canisius would add three more goals to win 12-5.
Canisius (4-3, 4-0) outshot Marist 35-28 and held a 35-30 ground ball advantage. The Golden Griffins also won 11 of the 19 faceoffs in the game. Junior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Red Foxes, with Canisius goalie Chris Courteau making six saves. Marist took 10 penalties for 11:30 as Canisius had six penalties for 5:00.
Marist (0-10, 0-4) return to action on Tuesday, April 8th when it takes on Vermont at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. Gametime is scheduled for 3 p.m.
