POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team won its sixth consecutive game on Tuesday, posting a 13-4 triumph over Albany at the McCann Baseball Field. Junior third baseman Kyle Meyer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) scored four runs as the Red Foxes had 13 hits, drew seven walks and got hit by six pitches in the contest.
Starting pitcher Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) went 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out three to earn his staff-leading fourth win of the season. Freshman right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.) followed Cary with 2.1 inning of scoreless relief, and senior left-hander Tom Close (Devon, Pa.) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
After spotting Albany a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Red Foxes roared back to score eight consecutive runs. Marist scored its first run in the second on an RBI single by red-shirt freshman center fielder Shane Kingsley (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and then four runs in the third, all of which scored on either wild pitches or passed balls. The Red Foxes added three more runs in the eighth to take an 8-2 lead.
Albany scored twice in the top of the sixth before Putnam came in to end the Great Danes' rally by inducing a flyout to end the inning with two runners on. The Red Foxes then tacked on four more runs in the sixth in an inning where they sent nine batters to the plate. Marist added another run in the eighth.
Twelve different Red Foxes recorded base hits in the game, paced by freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.), who had a single and a double. The Red Foxes had four extra-base hits in the game, as freshman first baseman Ben Henderson (Albany, N.Y.), sophomore center fielder Kyle LaHonta (Walnut Creek, Calif.) and junior catcher Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) also doubled.
Marist now stands at 11-12 this season, while Albany fell to 5-23-1. The Red Foxes will play the second of their seven consecutive home games on Wednesday, when they host Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
