POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Manhattan on Saturday, suffering a 6-2 loss in 11 innings in the first game before being shut out by a score of 3-0 in game two. Junior left-hander Josh Rickards (Glenolden, Pa.) started game one and went the first 10 innings without allowing an earned run.
Rickards allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six. He allowed two runs in the sixth inning, both of which were unearned. His earned run average for the season dropped to 2.73.
Marist opened in the scoring in the bottom of the third. With two outs and the bases loaded, junior right fielder Brian McDonough (Hanover, Mass.) battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk which forced home sophomore shortstop Richard Curylo (Staten Island, N.Y.). Curylo had led off the inning with a single.
After Manhattan scored twice to go ahead in its half of the sixth, the Red Foxes tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Junior designated hitter Andrew Stanton (Delmar, N.Y.) doubled to dead center, and advanced to third on an error. He was then driven home by a double off the bat of freshman center fielder Michael Gallic (Tolland, Conn.).
In the top of the 11th, Manhattan third baseman Chad Salem hit a grand slam to put the Jaspers up 6-2. The Jaspers held the Red Foxes scoreless in their half of the 11th to earn the win.
Tom Moran (2-1) earned the win for Manhattan out of the bullpen. Moran pitched 4.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Moran relieved starter Tom Costigan, who gave up two runs in 6.2 innings. Costigan gave up eight hits and three walks, striking out six.
Junior righty Jacob Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. The Red Foxes left 14 runners on base, as compared to four for the Jaspers.
Game two was scoreless until the sixth inning. After sophomore right-hander Richard Cary (Binghamton, N.Y.) had retired 13 in a row, Manhattan put together a two-out rally to push across three runs. Cary was then relieved by freshman right-hander Kyle Putnam (New Windsor, N.Y.), who retired the four batters he faced. Cary took his first loss of the season, falling to 6-1.
Mike Gazzola (2-2) went all the way for Manhattan, tossing a seven-hitter. Gazzola walked two and struck out two.
By getting hits in both games, Curylo extended his hitting streak to 11. Freshman second baseman Ricky Pacione (Newburgh, N.Y.) got three hits in the doubleheader.
Marist fell to 18-22 overall and 7-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Manhattan is now 23-18-1 overall and 12-5 in the MAAC.
The teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at the McCann Baseball Field at noon. Dan Forman (6-3, 4.40) will start for Manhattan.
