POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist entered Sunday afternoon's match with Lehigh looking to build on a win the team notched Friday night at Lafayette. The women's soccer program dropped a 1-0 decision to the Mountain Hawks.
The goal for Lehigh came on their only shot on goal of the game in the 88th minute off the foot of Glynn Fitzer. She put the ball into the back of the net, beating Red Foxes goalkeeper Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) to the short side.
After a relatively quiet first half, Marist took the momentum in the opening stages of the second half, but could not convert on many of their opportunities. The most notable of their chances came when sophomore Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.) was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Classmate Lauren Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.) would come up from the Marist backfield to take the shot. Lehigh's goalkeeper, Lauren Mains punched the Tillotson shot over the cross bar and out of play to keep the score tied at zero.
After the penalty kick, Marist would take three consecutive corner kicks, and as a result got shots after each corner. The Red Foxes had four corners in the match to go along with seven shots, four of which found their way on goal.
Balzarini took the loss in net for Marist. Her record fell to 2-3 in the 2008 season.
Marist will continue their three-game home stand Friday night, when they face-off with the Army Black Knights of the Patriot League. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
