Marist's Winning Streak Snapped At Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Marist volleyball team had its four-match winning streak snapped on Sunday as the Red Foxes fell in five sets (25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 10-15) at Canisius. Junior outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) led all players with 23 kills and a .432 hitting percentage. She was also in on four blocks.

Sophomore Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) also had a double-double with 56 assists and 12 digs. Freshman Cassie Campbell (Canton, Ohio) set a new career-high in digs, leading all players with 22. Senior Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) had a very strong match defensively with 12 digs and five blocks.

Marist (6-9, 1-1 MAAC) started the match strong, taking the first four points of the opening set. The Red Foxes grew the lead to five at 15-10 with consecutive kills from Schaefer and Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas). Schmid tallied another kill at 18-12 to give Marist its largest lead of the set. Marist hit .355 in the first set which powered a 25-19 win in the set.

Canisius (7-3, 2-0 MAAC) came back in the second set, jumping out to a 10-6 lead by taking advantage of Marist miscues. The Golden Griffins lead got as high as seven at 14-7 with a kill from Michelle Godfrey. Marist closed to within two at 19-17 with back to back kills from Foss and Schaefer as well as one of seven blocks from Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.). Canisius, however, took advantage of 11 Marist hitting errors in the set to win 25-21 and even the match at 1-1.

The Golden Griffins poured it on in the third set, hitting a match-high .389 in the set. The two teams battled to an early 5-5 tie, but Canisius went on a 9-3 run highlighted by three kills from Morgan Ammons to take a 14-8 lead. Ammons struck again to give Canisius its largest lead of the set at 19-12. Marist did not go away quietly as Schmid and Foss powered a 6-1 run to get within two at 20-18. Trailing 23-19, Foss put down a kill to spark a 4-0 run that tied the set at 23-23. Canisius, though, sealed the set with a block from Brittany Gerde and Michelle Godfrey to win 25-23 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Red Foxes took an early 5-2 lead in the fourth set with kills from Burke and Foss. Canisius stayed within three for much of the set getting to 13-11. A Schultze kill started a 6-1 run that gave Marist a 19-12 lead, its largest of the set. The Golden Griffins got to within two at 23-21 with a kill from Godfrey but Schmid and Schultze each had a kill to give the Red Foxes the last two points of the set, taking the fourth 25-22 and forcing a fifth set. Canisius started the fifth set taking four of the first five points. The Golden Griffins' .333 hitting percentage in the fifth set helped turn a 4-1 lead into an 11-5 advantage with four kills from Ammons. Marist battled to within three as a Foss kill made the score 12-9 but Canisius took three of the next four points to win the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

Canisius outhit Marist .276-.217 in the match and held an 11-10 edge in blocks. Marist held a slight 72-71 advatage in digs. Ammons led the Golden Griffins in kills with 21 kills hitting .304 with eight digs. Renee Lettow had 13 kills and nine digs, while Michelle Godfrey had 10 kills and a match-high eight blocks. Sarah Podlesh led the Canisius back row defense with 21 digs.

Marist returns home for a match against Fairfield on Thursday. First serve at the McCann Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.
