HIGH POINT, N.C. - The Marist volleyball team rebounded quickly from a 3-1 loss to UNC Greensboro earlier on Friday by hitting a season-high .320 in a 3-0 sweep (25-15, 28-26, 25-21) of South Carolina State at the High Point University Classic. The Red Foxes held the Bulldogs to a .140 hitting percentage in the match, Marist's second win of the 2008 season.
For the second straight match, sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Schultze (Austin, Texas) added 13 kills and hit .417. Middle blocker Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) had eight kills and hit .889. Defensively, Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led Marist with 12 digs. Senior Kelsey Schaefer (Maria Stein, Ohio) added eight digs.
Marist (2-5) started the match strong, opening the first set on a 9-3 run with kills from Foss, Schultze, and Allie Burke (Alpharetta, Ga.). South Carolina State battled back, getting to within two at 16-14. That would be as close as the Bulldogs would get. The Red Foxes ended the set on a 9-1 run, aided by two kills apiece from Schmid and Schultze, to win the first frame 25-15. Marist hit .400 in the first set and held South Carolina State to .133.
The second set started with South Carolina State taking the lead, 9-5, on kills from Gisela Kloss, Shabree Robertson, and Jarne Gleaton. Marist, however, could not be stopped. A Schultze kill sparked a 10-6 run that tied the match at 15-15. Following three more ties, Marist went on a 3-0 run highlighted by a Schultze solo block to take a 21-18 lead. The Red Foxes later had a 24-21 lead, but South Carolina State fought off three set points to tie the set at 24-24. The Bulldogs then took the lead, 25-24, with a Kloss kill. Schaefer answered back with a kill from Schaefer to tie the set at 25-25. With the set tied at 26-26, Foss got a kill to give the Red Foxes a 27-26 lead. An attack error from Peri Ligons gave Marist the second set win, 28-26.
The third set was tight at the outset with seven ties and seven lead changes in the first 18 points, resulting in a 9-9 tie. Marist would break out from the tie with a 6-2 run, highlighted by a Schmid service ace, to take a 15-12 lead. The Bulldogs came back to tie the set at 17-17 and 18-18, but a Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) kill followed by a Schultze kill gave the Red Foxes a 20-18 lead. South Carolina State got within one at 20-19, but Marist's .344 hitting percentage was too much for the Bulldogs as Marist won the set 25-21, completing the sweep.
South Carolina State (1-5) was led by Ligons' 11 kills. Gleaton hit a team-high .294 with nine kills. Kloss had eight kills and a match-high 13 digs.
