BALTIMORE, MD. - The Marist volleyball team won its third straight match Saturday night, sweeping Loyola at Reitz Arena 27-25, 25-22, 25-21. Junior middle blocker Lindsey Schmid (Austin, Texas) led all players with 11 kills and four blocks, hitting .444 for the match. The Red Foxes are now 7-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and 13-9 overall. Freshman Emily Brosky (Whitehall, Pa.) led Marist with 14 digs.
Loyola (10-16, 5-6 MAAC) got out to a quick 4-2 lead, getting a kill and solo block from Karlee Woodward. Marist came back with a Schmid kill and an ace by Hanna Stoiberg (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) to tie the set at 4-4. The Greyhounds took the lead back, going ahead by four at 10-6 on a kill by Kathryn Dircks. The Red Foxes used kills by Schmid and Estes, as well as a couple Loyola errors, to tie the set at 15-15. Marist then took a 17-15 lead on a Schmid kill and a Stephanie Robinett (Sugar Land, Texas) ace. Joanna Foss (Northville, Mich.) grew the Red Foxes' lead to three at 21-18 with a kill. Marist had a set point at 24-22 after a Loyola service error, but Taylor Koncelik put down a kill to get within one at 24-23. The Greyhounds then tied the set at 24-24 on a Marist error. With the set tied at 25-25, the Red Foxes took the set on kills by Estes and Schmid.
Marist jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the second set, with Schmid tallying a kill and two blocks during that span. Foss, Schultze, and Estes also had kills to open the set. The Red Foxes grew the lead to five at 16-11 on a Kayla Burton (Kissimmee, Fla.) kill. Marist hit .276 in the second set, and used a Schmid kill and a Brosky service ace to take its largest lead of the set at seven, 21-14. Loyola got within four at 23-19, getting kills by Dircks and Janet Pressler as well as a block by Woodward and Aubrey Kirven to get there. The Red Foxes then got kills from Foss and Schultze to win the set 25-22.
Loyola jumped out to a quick start in the third set, using a Brittany Born ace and kills by Woodward and Dircks to go ahead 6-3. Marist used a block by Schmid and Estes to power a 4-0 run that gave the Red Foxes a 7-6 lead. With the set tied at 11-11, the Red Foxes took advantage of some Greyhound miscues to go ahead 15-12. Marist led 17-15 when Pressler hit a kill to get Loyola within one at 17-16. The Greyhounds then got a Marist error to tie the set at 17-17. The set was tied at 18-18 when Burton and Dawn Jan (Belleville, N.J.) combined for a block that started a 3-0 run for Marist, putting the Red Foxes ahead 21-18. Marist lead 23-21 when a block by Schultze and Schmid gave the Red Foxes' match point at 24-21. A Loyola error gave Marist the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Marist hit .238 for the match as Loyola hit .236. The Red Foxes held a 34-31 advantage in digs, while the Greyhounds had a 7-6 edge in blocks. Woodward led Loyola with 10 kills, as Born led all players with 15 digs.
The Red Foxes continue its current road trip on Sunday afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. match at Saint Peter's.
