Box Score

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. - The seventh-seeded Marist women's soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship, with a 5-0 victory over the Saint Peter's Peahens on Thursday morning at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. Senior Kate Fox (Franklin, Mass.) became Marist's all-time leader in goals and points, with 26 and 61, respectively, as she and freshman Jackie Frey (Monroe, N.Y.) each scored two goals in the match.

Fox scored the first two goals of the match, in the 13th and 19th minutes, respectively. She now has nine goals this season to lead the Red Foxes. Frey notched her fifth and sixth goals of the season, just over five minutes apart in the 55th and 60th minutes. Junior Jamie Balzarini (Holbrook, N.Y.) made two saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season, and sixth of her career.

Marist (7-9-2) opened the scoring as Fox took a through ball from freshman Jackie Sabia (Wayne, N.J.). Fox dribbled past a defender and beat the Peahens keeper, Caitlin Hoffer, to the far post. The Red Foxes doubled their lead 5:32 after the first tally, as junior Kassandra Palmer (Washington, N.J.) played a ball from midfield to Fox. Fox settled the ball 20 yards from the goal, dribbled past a Peahens defender, and scored the ball on the ground for her second goal of the match.

Frey scored each of her two goals in the second half. Her first came off a feed from Fox, who fed the ball from the top of the box. The assist gave Fox a five-point game. Frey scored her sixth marker of the season off a pass from Merrilynn Esteve (Morristown, N.J.).

Junior Amy Tillotson (Islip, N.Y.) added a fifth goal in the 74th minute as she headed a deflection off the post. It was Tillotson's fourth goal of the season.

Fox's five-point match was the second of the season for the Red Foxes. Sophomore Mariah Downey (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied five points when Marist hosted Saint Peter's on Sunday, Sept. 27.

With the win, Marist will play in the quarterfinals of the 2009 MAAC Championship on Friday, Oct. 30 against the second-seeded Siena Saints (12-4, 6-3 MAAC). First touch at Disney's Wide World of Sports is scheduled for 11:15 a.m.
