POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team shot 56% from the field in the second half to pull away from Hartford Saturday night at the McCann Center, winning 68-47. The Red Foxes' defense also shined in the second 20 minutes, holding the Hawks to 17.1% from the field. The tandem of Erica Allenspach (Miamisburg, Ohio) and Corielle Yarde (Leesport, Pa.) led Marist with 16 points and six rebounds apiece.
Allenspach also had a game-high four assists. The only other player to score in double-figures for Marist Saturday night was sophomore guard Lynzee Johnson (Bellbrook, Ohio) added seven points and four rebounds off the bench. Rachele Fitz (Seven Hills, Ohio) and Kate Oliver (Sydney, Australia) each scored six points.
Hartford (7-3) controlled the first 3:40 of the game, taking a 10-7 lead as Diana Delva scored eight of the Hawks' first ten points. Yarde then made a putback layup and a three on consecutive possessions to give Marist its first lead of the game, 12-10, at the 15:30 mark. The lead grew to six with 13:33 to go in the first as Allenspach and Fitz each made a pair of free throws. After an Oliver jumper put the Red Foxes ahead 18-13 with 12:43 to go in the half, Ruthanne Doherty made a jump shot that started a 7-0 run for Hartford that put the Hawks ahead 19-18 with 8:49 to go in the half.
Yarde then keyed another run for Marist, scoring the next four points for the Red Foxes to put the home team ahead 22-19 with 6:27 left in the half. Hartford responded with a 5-0 run, highlighted by a Delva three-point play, to give them a 24-22 lead with 5:27 until halftime. Allenspach tied the game at 24-24 with a layup at the 5:13 mark. After that basket, both teams went cold from the field. The two teams combined to go 0-for-7 from the field over the next 3:12, with Fitz ending the drought for both teams. Her basket at the 2:01 mark gave the Red Foxes a 26-24 lead. Erica Beverly tied the game with a jump shot from the free throw line. Marist took the lead back, 29-26, on an Allenspach three with 27 seconds left. The lead would stand going into halftime.
Marist (6-4) dominated the start of the second half, going on an 11-4 run over the first 5:15 to take a 40-30 lead. Two Best three-pointers highlighted the run, which saw Hartford go 2-for-13 over that stretch. The lead grew to 16 with 12:23 to go, as Oliver, Johnson, and Maria Laterza (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each sunk jump shots for Marist, giving them a 46-30 lead. Johnson then made her only three of the game at the 10:02 mark, giving the Red Foxes a 49-32 lead. Marist took its largest lead of the game at the 3:34 mark, when a pair of Allenspach foul shots put the Red Foxes ahead by 27, 66-39.
The Red Foxes shot 45.1% from the field for the game, holding Hartford to a 26.5% mark. Marist also shot 88.9% from the free throw line, making 16-of-18 attempts. The Hawks outrebounded Marist 42-39, but committed 12 turnovers to the Red Foxes' nine. Delva led Hartford with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Beverly and Jackie Smith each added eight points.
