EMMITSBURG, MD. - The Marist men's lacrosse team rode a four-goal first quarter to a 7-4 win at Mount St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The win gives the Red Foxes a 2-0 record in the MAAC Lacrosse League. Juniors Ryan Sharkey (Westfield, N.J.) and Matt Teichmann (Huntington, N.Y.) each had two goals in the win.
Marist (2-3, 2-0 MAAC) got on the board seven seconds into the game as Sharkey assisted on a Dan Lang (Northport, N.Y.) goal, the first of his career. The Mountaineers responded at the 13:09 mark of the first quarter with a Cody Lehrer goal. The Red Foxes then got two straight goals from Teichmann at the 10:27 mark and the 9:26 mark to give Marist a 3-1 lead. Once again, Mount St. Mary's tied the game with goals from Mark Stapor and Christian Kellett, making the score 3-3 with 5:48 to go in the first.
The Red Foxes took the lead for good with 1:35 to go in the first quarter on Sharkey's first goal of the game, making the score 4-3. Lou Loria (Bethpage, N.Y.) scored his first career goal with 10:51 remaining in the second quarter to put Marist ahead 5-3. Stapor scored his second goal with 5:53 remaining to get the Mountaineers within a goal. 5-4. That would be the last goal for Mount St. Mary's as Marist held the lead into halftime.
Marist dominated the third quarter, outshooting Mount St. Mary's 11-5 in the quarter. Sharkey scored his second goal of the game with 3:13 remaining in the third to put the Red Foxes ahead 6-4. Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) had nine saves in the second half to keep the Mountaineers off the scoreboard and preserve the win for Marist.
Mount St. Mary's (1-4, 1-1 MAAC) outshot Marist 31-29, but the Red Foxes held a 20-18 advantage in ground balls. Matt Francis (Lansdale, Pa.) won 11 of 15 faceoffs for Marist and had three ground balls. The road win for Marist is the team's first since winning 9-8 in double-overtime at Lafayette on April 10, 2007.
The Red Foxes will next be in action on Saturday, March 28 for a 1 p.m. game at MAAC Lacrosse League opponent Wagner.
