Marist Falls 12-7 At Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. - Trailing 8-5 going into the fourth quarter, the Marist men's lacrosse team could only muster two goals in the fourth to fall at Binghamton 12-7 on Saturday. The Red Foxes are now 0-2 on the season. Junior attack Ryan Sharkey (West Field, N.J.) recorded his second-straight hat trick of the season. Corey Zindel (Randolph, N.J.) and Bob von Hoffman (Montclair, N.J.) each tallied three points on the day.

Binghamton (1-4) scored the first goal of the game six minutes into the first quarter when Steven Carlson found the back of the net. Sharkey responded 47 seconds later as Zindel set him up for the tying goal. The Bearcats added two more goals in the quarter from Duncan Streeten and Brian Donohue to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.

Marist (0-2) got back on the board at the 13:56 mark of the second quarter as senior Paul Santavicca (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored his lone goal of the game to make the score 3-2. The Bearcats and Red Foxes traded goals to end the half as Donahue and Frank Donlon traded goals with von Hoffman to make the score 5-4 at halftime.

The Red Foxes quickly tied the game at 5-5 in the third quarter as Sharkey scored 21 seconds into the half. Marist's momentum, however, would be shortlived. Binghamton took back the lead at the 12:29 mark of the third quarter on a Jake Boyce goal. The Bearcats added two more goals in the third to take an 8-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Binghamton outshot Marist 13-2 in the third quarter.

After Santavicca was penalized for an illegal crosse, Binghamton scored two straight man-up goals to start the fourth quarter to take a 10-5 lead with 11:26 to go in the game. The Bearcats added another goal at the 8:55 mark of the fourth to go ahead 11-5. Sharkey and freshman Jack Kensil (Massapequa, N.Y.) each scored in the final quarter to make the final score 12-7.

Marist was outshot 45-24 in the game with Binghamton also holding a 30-20 advantage in ground balls. The Bearcats also won 11 of 20 faceoffs. Senior goalie Ryan Penner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made 17 saves for the Red Foxes as Keegan Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) led Marist with four ground balls. Donohue and Steven Carlson each scored three goals for Binghamton. Andy Cook had two goals and four assists.

The Red Foxes return to Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field on Saturday, March 14 to take on Canisius. Opening face-off is at 1 p.m.
