POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist softball team suffered two losses on Thursday to Columbia in a doubleheader at the Softball Park at Gartland Field. The final score of game one was 9-1 in five innings and game two was 9-3. Seniors Lindsey Kinel (East Hartford, Conn.) and Melissa Giordano (Stamford, Conn.) led the way at the plate on the afternoon as they combined for two runs and nine hits.
In game one Caitlin Schell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) had a solid first three innings of the ball game. During the stretch she struck out four batters and kept the score knotted at zero.
Columbia did their damage in the fourth as they exploded for nine runs, behind six walks and three hits. The Lions sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning.
Marist responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning as Kinel drove in sophomore Kate Malloy (Fair Haven, N.J.) on a double to right center. However, Marist could not push another run across and game one was completed after five innings.
In game two, Columbia scored a run in each of the first three innings to boost them to a 3-0 lead.
The Red Foxes would cut the lead to two, 3-1 when Heather Young (Saugerties, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third.
Columbia put up a four spot in the bottom of the fourth to expand their lead to 7-1, and would add two in the fifth to go up 9-1.
With their backs to the wall, the Red Foxes would score a run to keep the game going. Giordano hit her first triple of the season with one out. She would score on a Mary Beth Pomes (Milford, Pa.) single. Giordano's triple moved her into a tie for fourth place all-time with nine in her career.
Marist (9-19, 2-0 MAAC) will return to action on Saturday, April 4 at noon when the Red Foxes host the Rider Broncs in a conference doubleheader.
